Session Aims & Highlights (2026-10-02)

Main aims

1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
2. AstroMain. Check new AstroMain 3.84  version for any issues or problems following introduction of a number of changes.

Highlights

• Targets. 25/31 planned targets were completed with 2 targets partially completely. Other targets failed due to cloud

• Session.SkyConditionsTab images weren't saved during the session. The panelSkyGraph control containing SkyConditions graphs wasn't captured during the course of the S1458 session. Log file show messages indicate that CaptureControl() was failing as the panelSkyGraph didn't have a windows handle. "Capture skipped for Session.SkyConditionsTab01.png: invalid handle". A SkyConditions.20261002.png file created during the session contained an empty default image instead of the expected graphs. This is likely to occur because the TabSkyConditions tab hadn't been shown at least once.  Why the error has just begun in the last 2 sessions in unclear. Fixed in AstroMain 3.84.1 by modifying ShowObservatoryTabs() to temporarily show the TabSkyConditions tab to ensure that handle is created for the  panelSkyGraph control.

• AstroMain's TelePosition and ObsEnv Senders are still doing work and producing persistent sequence of Exception Messages when service are stopped.  When running in Visual Studio environment a whole series of SocketExceptions are listed in the Immediate Window and continue even when all services are stopped. Investigating shows that WaitForConnection routines that haven't connected continue running even when the associated Service is stopped. There are two senders that are responsible TelePosition Send and ObsEnv Send.  The WaitForConnections loops don't have any sleep period so the cause CPUt to be hammered. Fixed in AstroMain 3.84.1.  The loop in each WaitForConnection rountine now includes a Thread.Sleep(250) and a code block that checks the status of _StopRequested flag and if raised calls a new StopClient() routine to close/dispose the relevant TCPClient instance and exit the WaitForConnection routine.

• Order of Light, Rain & Clarity fields in AstroMain and AstroGuard are different. AstroMain's Manager Tab has fields ordered 'Clarity', 'Light', 'Rain' , whilst AstroGuard has fields order 'Light', 'Clarity', 'Rain'.  The AstroGuard ordering is the more sensible sequence.  AstroMain should be modified to use the same order as AstroGuard.  Fixed in AstroMain 3.84.3.

Continuous Improvement

• Modify AstroMain to use the UPB Ambient Temperature when weather data is not available. Weather data is not currently available as the AllSky/Weather coomputer failed on 2026-09-28 and has yet to be repaired or replaced. Live Observatory Sessions are continuing since installing the Cloud Sensor on the Observatory Computer and running AstroWeather in a reduced service mode. In this operation mode, AstroMain 3.83.14 & 3.84 show a a blank temperature field on the manager tab and a blank temperature value in reporting & logging. It is proposed that AstroMain uses the UPB Temperature as the master ambient temperature value when the Weather Station's outside tempertaure is not available. Implemented in AstroMain  3.84.1 by modifying

• Modify AstroWeather to close Sockets gracefully. During the course of general session on 2026-10-02 and isolated exception occured in the CloudSensor listener with the message "Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host". It is believed that this happened at the moment that AstroWeather program / Server closed. It proposed to modify AstroWeather so that its sockets are gracefully closed when either the respective service or the program closes.

• Extend AstroMove to allow latest AstroWeather version to be copied to the Observatory Computer. As part of a project to enable running a live Observatory Session whilst the AllSky/Weather Computer is unavailable, AstroWeather has been installed on the Observatory Computer, but to any program updates have to manually copied to the Observatory Computer from the the Development Computer. It is proposed to modify AstroMove to allow latest AstroWeather version to be copied to Observatory Computer (Laptop9) using the AstroMove program. This will involve copying and renaming controls and code lines associated with copying AstroWeather to Laptop7.  Implemented in AstroMove 1.18.6.

• Extend AstroPlan to upload Weather Forecast Graph and 60min Rain Graph to Observatory Website. Currently the vmsForecast.jpg and vmsRain60min.jpg files produced by AstroWeather are uploaded to the Observatory WebSite by the AstroAllSky program, but since the AllSky/Weather is currently out of action, AstroAllSky is not running and these files are not being uploaded to the website.   Since AstroWeather is currently moved across to run on the Observatory Computer where it now currently creates these two files it is proposed to extend AstroPlan to upload these two files where they have recent dates (ie with last 24 hours and are new).  Implemented in AstroPlan 1.47.4.

• Carry out Photometric Analysis for further variable stars. Define and perform photometric analysis of existing data for 'U And' using new 2026 workflow.

•  'Weather Forecast' should be formalised as a Service on AstroMain's Observatory Tab. The new WeatherForecast Listener should be formalised in AstroMain's Manager Tab by having a dedicated Service checkbox & line on the Observatory Tab. A new WeatherForecast listener has been added to AstroMain 3.84.1 to access the new TCP/I channel (port 4013) provided by AstroWeather.  Currently the new listener is carried on the back of the 'Scorecard' service (where WeatherForecast formerly resided withig the Scorecard record.  It is appropriate to make it a service in its own right, and have a line entry on the Observatory tab with service checkbox and status fields.  In order to create space for a new service line, the height of the AstroMain objconsole window, the Main tab control (tabControlMain) and the Services group box (groupboxServices) needs to be increased.  This will have benefits elsewhere for creating more white space or spreading out components for better UX. Implemented in AstroMain 3.84.3

• Refactor the supply of Weather Forecast data to AstroAllSky and AstroMain.  As part of a project to enable running a live Observatory Session whilst the AllSky/Weather Computer is unavailable, various changes have been made to allow Cloud Sensor data to be accessible on the Observatory Computer, and passed to AstroMain from AstroWeather program running in a reduced mode on the Observatory Computer. In the first two sessions using restricted data (S1457 & S1458). AstroWeather is receiving weather forecast data from OpenWeather, but it is not being communicated through to the AstroMain program.  To resolves this a new sender (WeatherForecasterB) had been added to AstroWeather 1.30.6, and a new Listener ( ForecastListener) has been added to AstroMain 3.84.1.  The new arrangement works but needs further optimisation and removal of duplicated operations, in particular there is overlap between the WeatherForecaster and WeatherForecasterB operations in AstroWeather, and between the ScorecardListener and ForecastListener in AstroMain, where forecast data is still also loaded from the Scorecard records (if AstroAllSky was running). The WeatherForecasterB uses AstroAllSky alogorithums to computer derived fields that AstroMain needs.  It is proposed to build on the recent work and implement a final refactored version of AstroWeather, AstroAllSky and AstroMain. The plans involve:
   - Consolidate AstroWeather as the sole source of ‘reformatted’ definitive Weather Forecast records.
 - Modify AstroAllSky to read the new 4013 channel, and not the 4008 channel, and drop its own derived field creation
   (AstroAllSky becomes a consumer of Weather Forcast data and not a producer of the data)
 - Modify AstroAllSky to no longer append WeatherForecast data to its Synopsis/Scorecard records
    (AstroAllSky's role is more tightly defined)
 - Modify AstroMain Synopsis/Scorecard listener to no longer parse weather weather forecast fields
    that role is already taken on by the new WeatherForecast listener.
  Implemented in AstroAllSky 3.29.  To be tested in full once the repaired/replaced AllSky/Weather Computer returns to service.

• Rationalise AstroWeather to just show connections for just 3 computers, not the current 4 computers. Currently in AstroWeather 1.30.6 the main Tab shows and operates on 4 computers, notionally Laptop 7, Laptop9, Laptop10, Laptop11.  Only 3 computers are needed Observatory Computer ((Laptop9), AllSky/Weather Computer (Laptop7) and Development Computer (Laptop11).   There is no requirement to connect to the legacy Laptop10 computer.  Removing the unused Computer reduces cpu, eases component management and improves form layout by It providing room for the clearer display of secondary channels (eg Cloud Sensor channel used by AstroGuard). To implement in AstroWeather 1.30.7.

• Check AstroWeather code to understand the implications of running ObsEnv services on the Observatory Computer.  AstroWeather is currently being run on the Observatory Computer whilst the AllSky/Weather Computer is out of action till it is repaired or replaced.  To fill-in functionality in the meantime there may be opportunity to have AstroWeather to run ObsEnv and Charts services, however it is essential to understand whether AstroWeather will overwrite AstroMain's ObsEnv file if ObsEnv service is run of 'Import ObsEnv' routine is used, or whether AstroWeather will definately use its own ObsEnv file.  Checking shows that AstroMain uses ObsEnv files in the folder 'C:\Data\CCD Imaging\ObsEnv', whilst AstroWeather uses ObsEnv file is in the folder 'C:\Data\AllSky Imaging\ObsEnv' that confirmed that AstroWeather definiately won't overwrite AstroMain's ObsEnv files  ImportObsEnv() and GetData() routines did have to be updated to allow HostComputer='LAPTOP9' to direct AstroWeather to use the AstroWeather ObsEnv files rather than ObsEnv files from the 'Local Copies' folder used on Development Computer (LAPTOP11).

• Consider to option of installing ISpy program onto Observatory Computer to allow the NorthCam view to be seen. Whilst the AllSky/Weather Computer is out of action, the usual remote sight of the night sky is limited to looking out of the window.  One option is to used the Observatory's NorthCam Camera (Tapo C325WB NightVision Camera)  is accessible via IP and doesn't require any wiring modifications to be accessed.  It requires the ISpy program to be installed on the Observatory Computer and configured.  If there is a long delay before the AllSky/Weather is replaced, it would also be an option to install AstroNorthCam on the Observatory Computer.
